Welcome to ancient Japan! That’s where the theme leads us to this time with its spirits, legends and many tales. Champions of Kamigawa is a legend oriented set, with its spiritual flavor and many unique cards that in this way have many broken effects. Each color has Legends to offer, but the most iconic ones are the Dragons. Kokusho, the Evening Star, Yosei, the Morning Star, Keiga, the Tide Star, Jugan, the Rising Star and Ryusei, the Falling Star are all 5/5 that cost six mana, and with some huge effect when they die. For example, Kokusho makes you gain 5 life for each opponent that lost 5 life, and Yosei makes an opponent skip the untap phase while you can tap up to five of that opponent’s permanents.

Another sort of colored cycle is the legendary lands. One for each mana color has an ability that targets legendary creatures only. Most of them give combat bonuses like gaining fear, +1/+1, prevent 2 damage, first strike, while the blue one can untap legends. As a single color analysis, red so far has demonstrated to have the most effective spells, as Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Through the Breach are tournament level superstars, especially the red goblin which can form a two-card combo with many creatures. On the other hand, the red instant is known for letting Emrakul, the Aeons Torn pop up at the end of turns everywhere to abuse the 15 damage and annihilator 6.

Blue offers good choices in the hand of the drawing mage Azami, Lady of Scrolls, and Gifts Ungiven, a scream for combo cards or toolbox decks engine, as it lets you search for four different cards, get two in your hand and two in the graveyard at the opponent’s choice. However, as you can just search for two, he must choose those first to get into the graveyard, and the interaction with some bigger fatties and Unburial Rites is an easy guess. Green and black offers good tools as well, in the hands of Glimpse of Nature, a green “play a creature, draws a card” that powers elves combo, while black has Night of Souls’ Betrayal, a legendary enchantment that gives -1/-1 to all creatures in play and has proven to be a hyper effective card against many decks.
