It’s easy to talk about Birthing Pod. It’s an artifact, it’s green, and it’s a typical card that can be related to a proficient toolbox. Since cards like Survival of the Fittest were printed, creature-based strategies involving a different use other than play-and-attack are commonly appreciated, and the Birthing Pod is probably the most powerful after the named enchantment.

First of all, it’s a phyrexian mana card, which means that things can be cheaper if traded with two life, and in this case it’s the casting cost that can be made cheaper. Secondly, the ability allows you to sacrifice a creature in play, search for another one that costs one mana more and put it directly into play. This effect allows chains of creatures and effects, and of course strategies that involve graveyard and comes-into-play effects. In Modern, the Birthing Pod was rapidly included in one of the top decks, listing creatures like Eternal Witness, Voice of Resurgence, Shriekmaw, Linvala, Keeper of Silence, and Qasali Pridemage. The deck works fine with persist creatures also, allowing them to be used to fetch another card and return. The interaction works so fine that it became the first combo condition of the deck as well; using one copy of Melira, Sylvok Outcast and a persist creature, along with any continuous sacrifice outlet for Kitchen Finks or Murderous Redcap to come back every time. The power of Birthing Pod assembles creatures in play and gets the right pieces, and this fits perfectly in this kind of decks. With the addition of Chord of Calling to fetch ulterior cards, or Reveillark to bring back two sacrificed power dudes, the Birthing Pod becomes a must-play, a fun piece of great decks that can also yield nice results in competitive environments aside from fun Commander matches.
